Mental health is crucial to overall health and well-being at every stage of life. Each May, we recognize National Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the resilience of those living with behavioral health conditions, break down stigmas that inhibit recovery and normalize the act of seeking treatment.
Why is Mental Health Important?
Just as physical health determines your ability to perform everyday activities, mental health is equally instrumental in contributing to your quality of life. Your psychological state has the power to disrupt many facets of life, including work performance and relationships.
If you broke a bone, you’d seek treatment from professionals to help you recover. The act of seeking treatment for behavioral health issues is no less important, but for many, the reluctance to receive care is rooted in deep-seated shame and long-standing societal stigmas.
Neglect of our mental health is a slippery slope that can lead to negative consequences, the blowback of which can send shockwaves throughout our lives. Poor mental health can lead to a variety of impediments, including strained relationships, decreased productivity and heightened stress levels, just to name a few.
What is Mental Health Awareness Month?
For more than 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month during the month of May to shine a light on the important role mental health plays in our lives.
Every person’s journey is different. By joining together with other mental health professionals to raise awareness and share resources designed to support individuals in need, we have the power to provide lifesaving messages, destigmatize mental health issues and touch countless lives.
