What to expect at your first appointment

A man gives support to another person by placing his hand on their shoulder.

The first step on your recovery journey is acknowledging you need help for your mental health or substance use, and the second step is reaching out for support. For many people, taking that leap feels monumental, but you don’t have to do it alone. At Community Treatment Integrations Oklahoma (CTI-OK), we’re here to walk with you every step of the way, starting with your first appointment.

Is it normal to be nervous about starting therapy?

Yes! Most everyone feels anxious or uncertain before that first appointment. Misinformation and stigmas can condition people to believe seeking treatment means something is “wrong” with them. In truth, it’s a sign you’re ready to take care of yourself and put in the work to feel better.

Concerned about the long-term commitment? Time, cost and how therapy will fit into your life are all valid considerations. Rest assured, our team works with you to create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your needs, schedule and financial situation.

It’s not uncommon for us to hear doubts from potential clients about whether treatment will actually “work.” Healing looks different for everyone, but with consistency, meaningful progress is possible. And if you’re worried about feeling judged, fear not: at CTI-OK, you’ll always be met with empathy and respect, not criticism.

Recovery is about finding what works for you, and we’re here to partner with you to find out what that might look like.

What should someone expect when they arrive for their first session?

Taking the first step toward treatment is an act of courage. Our goal is to help you move past any barriers you face and start building a plan for recovery in a safe, welcoming atmosphere. We have translators and bilingual providers on site to assist Spanish, Portuguese and Korean-speaking patients and their families, and can access translation services for people who speak other languages.

When you arrive, one of our friendly staff members will greet you and help you get settled with some paperwork. Your initial clinical assessment is more of an introduction than a traditional therapy session. It’s your chance to meet your care team, get a feel for our space and start building a relationship with your counselor.

You’ll be asked to give some background information and medical history, as well as share your concerns and goals. It’s a two-way dialogue: you’ll be encouraged to ask questions, share what's on your mind, and discuss what you hope to gain from treatment. The frequency and time frame for future services, including a medical evaluation, will be determined based on the level of need.

The first step on your recovery journey is acknowledging you need help for your mental health or substance use, and the second step is reaching out for support.

What are some helpful first steps to take?

The most important first step is to make an initial inquiry by giving us a call or visiting our website. If finances are a concern, ask about financial support and insurance up front so you know what to expect.

Your first few sessions will be exploratory: not only will you be getting to know your care team, you’ll be getting a better understanding of what you’re looking to gain from this experience. It’s important to be as open and honest as possible, because the clinician is there to listen and help, not judge.

Remember: you’re never locked in to one approach. Recovery is about finding what works for you, and we’re here to partner with you to find out what that might look like.
