Celebrating National Recovery Month

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

September is National Recovery Month, a time to promote and celebrate the resilience of the millions of Americans in recovery and the unwavering commitment of the loved ones and health professionals who support them.

Why is National Recovery Month important?

Seven in ten adults who have had a mental health or substance use condition are in recovery. Since 1989, National Recovery Month has been a chance to recognize the achievements of those in recovery, while also increasing public awareness about the nuances of recovery.

The bottom line: recovery transforms lives for both those seeking recovery and their families and support network, and National Recovery Month serves to highlight the life-changing impact recovery can have on so many who are struggling.

How is National Recovery Month helping to promote awareness?

By shining a light on how mental health and substance use disorders can affect anyone—regardless of age, race, or social standing—National Recovery Month helps to foster greater public understanding about recovery, while also recognizing the unwavering dedication of service providers and recovery community members working diligently to enhance the lives of those in recovery.

This month, millions of Americans will band together to share their stories, while prevention, treatment and recovery programs around the country unite to celebrate one another and work together to reduce stigmas that still plague the recovery community. In addition to raising awareness about the resources available, it’s also a time to advocate for improved access to mental health and substance use services, which are already limited in much of our country.

What are common misconceptions that National Recovery Month aims to address?

No one is perfect, and mental health and substance use disorders do not discriminate. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Sustained recovery is possible, but it is a long and often winding road, and sometimes that includes setbacks. People aren’t the sum of their worst moments, and relapses don’t make someone a failure. The most important thing is that you continue on your journey.

Medication management is a powerful tool that can be used to aid in the recovery process, and it still counts as recovery. It’s also the reason why having the support of an understanding, experienced professional care team is crucial.
